The new Champion Things album “Ride of the Valkyries” is the 6th album from the Belfast based group. Champion Things weaves groove based electronica with theme based spoken word narratives. And this is the 6th recording in just over 3 years.

The group has often written about difficult subjects but “Ride of the Valkyries” deals with the mistreatment of children, from everyday bullying, to difficulties at school, to abuse in the home and in sporting associations.

“We tend to look at more everyday instances of how children are treated, rather than what is often investigated, the extremes.

“The opening tracks deal with the impact of industrialisation on the family, refracted through an accident in a quarry, and the impact on the survivors. The following, Football and Football reprise were inspired, if that is the right word, by the scandals with coaches and young boys in the Football Association’s academies. The question that needed to be asked was why did everyone miss the mistreatment for so long. The tracks Night, and Bobbin Whir veer towards mistreatment at home, Useless suggests bullying at school and Ride of the Valkyries offers a narrative where tension exists both at school and at home.”

On this album Vic Bronzini Fulton from Earth Music Studios in Belfast composed the music, and produced, engineered and mixed the material. Michael McKinney composed and played bass on two tracks, Night and Bobbin Whir. The spoken word narratives were written by Gordon Hewitt.
